Integrating ACT and Schema Therapy for Therapists

The best way to be an effective therapist is to learn what it’s like to be a client. When we do the work on ourselves and are able to change our own negative patterns and behaviors we become better therapists. We gain an understanding of what works and what mechanisms drive behavioral change in therapy. In this webinar you will gain insight into how your own core beliefs (schemas), avoidance behaviors, and values impact your work as a psychologist and with clients.

This webinar will be interactive and experiential. We will focus on 5 key schemas that show up for clinicians and guide you in using the core ACT processes to help you build willingness and acceptance towards your schema pain and take steps towards what matters.

We will identify your schemas and the schema coping behaviors that you use in an attempt to avoid schema pain. Next, we’ll clarify your values and the kind of clinician that you want to be. Finally, we will use role plays and experiential exercises to work with the thoughts and feelings that stop you from living your values in your clinical and professional work.

You’ll have an opportunity to clarify your values in different domains related to the psychology/helping field including with clients, coworkers, colleagues, or as a leader/supervisor, teacher or manager.

We will practice ACT interventions, drawn from the hexaflex, including cognitive defusion, mindfulness, self-compassion, self as context, and emotion exposure to work with the thoughts and feelings that get in the way of living your values in your work.

This workshop is designed to help you:

1. Identify your schemas and schema avoidance behaviors in relation to your work.

2. Clarify your values in different domain of your career.

3. Use ACT processes to take steps towards living your values in your daily work.
